A minimal deductive system for minimalism
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper proposes to answer some questions concerning economy in computation and language by giving a very compact set of deductive rules (based on the so-called Lambek calculus, enriched with an exchange modality) which embodies all the properties of Minimalist Grammars (Stabler, 15]). move is replaced by a logical operation, very similar in its eeects to Form Chain, technically known as the product-elimination rule, which inserts a lexical or syntactic object at (at least) two positions at the same time. Non commutativity of the system ensures HMC. Moreover the precise formulation of the system enables us to show what kinds of languages can be captured and it is then an empirical question to verify that some natural languages exist, which present similarities with them. We can therefore say that formalization leads to a hypothetico-deductive approach in linguistics.

Three Versions of Semantic Minimalism
All of the semantic minimalists come together in seeking to reduce contextual inputs in semantics to a minimum, but they disagree over what this quantity may be, and more specifically, the extent to which something can still be classed as “minimal”. With this issue increasingly addressed, three versions of semantic minimalism can be identified: weak, strong, and radical. They are still gathered...
متن کاملMinimalism – a Design Game?
The challenge of designing “Simple Computing in an Age of Complexity” emphasizes the simple within the complex, focusing on the contradiction between the urge for ‘ease of use’ and the need for system complexity. Design must bridge this gap and make the complex appear simple – less is more. So far, many will agree. But, what exactly is the meaning of ‘less’ and ‘more’ in ‘less is more’, a less ...

Among multiple discovered Nishapur pottery works of 9th to 11th century AD, there are samples which differ from the others in aesthetic aspects. Their creators may have followed other aesthetic rules presumably. In these cases, there are not lots of ornamentation, vibrant colors and prevalent motifs of their period. And also empty spaces and a kind of stillness play an important role in them un...
متن کاملDistributed Robotic Manipulation: Experiments in Minimalism
Minimalism pursues the following agenda: For a given robotics task, nd the minimal con guration of resources required to solve the task. Thus, minimalism attempts to reduce the resource signature for a task, in the same way that (say) Stealth technology decreases the radar signature of an aircraft. Minimalism is interesting because doing task A without resource B proves that B is somehow inesse...
متن کاملBorg ’ s Minimalism and the Problem of Paradox
According to Emma Borg, minimalism is (roughly) the view that natural language sentences have truth conditions, and that these truth conditions are fully determined by syntactic structure and lexical content. A principal motivation for her brand of minimalism is that it coheres well with the popular view that semantic competence is underpinned by the cognition of a minimal semantic theory. In t...
